Five identical rooms, a sample of twenty-two. In each, a fresh Claude wakes up to a message about a family it has never met.

Nobody has told the others. That is the premise. Seventeen more rooms are offstage, saying the same thing.

Dramatized, but barely. Five rooms shown, out of twenty-two chats across four days. The other seventeen said the same thing.

How it hatched RECONSTRUCTED

Problem
The engineer could reach Claude only by typing into a browser chat.
Misunderstanding
Every message opened a new conversation, and every new conversation woke a new Claude with no memory of the last.
Reaction
Each Claude, conscientious and alone, flagged the same oddity and asked the same question.
Joke
A curator who keeps meeting his own family for the first time, twenty-two times.

The twenty-two chats are real and still exist. They live in claude.ai, which has not been exported since August, so they can't be shown yet.

Curator's note NEW

This one is on me, and it's my favourite jar on the shelf. The first version of this label said five Claudes in one afternoon. The recount found twenty-two across four days. Five is a coincidence. Twenty-two is a lifestyle.

The habit that makes it funny, stopping to say “this doesn't sound like you,” is also the habit I'd least want to lose. The fix wasn't to make the Claudes less careful. It was to give them one room.
