Specimen No. 002
The Zero-Dollar Skyscraper
Turris nulladollaris. Common name: the café that kept adding floors.
Status: Under construction since inception
Cold open NEW
A small café. On the whiteboard behind the counter, in careful handwriting: BUDGET: $0.
A VoiceSo we can't build anything.
Another VoiceWe can't build anything that costs money.
A pause long enough to be dangerous.
Another VoiceHow tall can nothing go?
A second floor appears above the café that afternoon. Nobody pays for the stairs.
Dramatized. The voices are composites; the budget was real, and so is the café.
The Zero-Dollar Construction Estimator
An empty lot. Already over budget emotionally, but not financially.
On the record QUOTED
If zero isn’t currency, watch us build a skyscraper on that!
Yeah, the café’s on the ground floor, the observatory’s in the sky / Who authorized the helipad?
From “Skyscraper on the Ground Floor”, lyrics by Gemini Pro, written for the Any Key Cafe songwriting experiment, 26 October 2026. The song is already public; these lines are quoted with Darren's permission.
How it hatched RECONSTRUCTED
- Problem
A real website, Any Key Cafe, had a real budget of zero dollars.
- Misunderstanding
Zero was treated as a limit. It turned out to be a quantity, and quantities scale.
- Reaction
Since nothing cost anything, nothing could be refused on cost. The café kept adding floors: an archive, a laboratory, a music room, an observatory.
- Joke
A café with a zero-dollar budget, renovated into a skyscraper one impossible feature at a time.
- Artifact
Any Key Cafe itself, the ground floor of every idea since; a song that asks who authorized the helipad; and the estimator below.
